Two people jailed in connection with June accident involving cyclist who killed Washoe Valley woman | News from Carson City, Nevada
The Nevada Department of Public Safety has arrested two people in connection with a June car crash with a cyclist that killed a Washoe Valley woman.
Cyclist Boryana Straubel, a 38-year-old Washoe Valley resident, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision, which occurred on Saturday, June 19, 2021 and reported at 7:44 a.m.
Boryana Straubel was a philanthropist and environmental sustainability advocate who founded jewelry company Generation Collection, according to the New York Times. She was also a former Tesla executive and the wife of former CTO JB Straubel.
According to the DPS, at approximately 7:44 a.m., Nevada Highway Patrol soldiers responded to an injury crash at US-395 Alternate and the first mile in Washoe County.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a silver 2015 Ford Edge was traveling southbound on US-395A north of milepost 1 in Washoe County. The Ford driver did not drive on the right side of the freeway, crossed the double yellow line and struck the cyclist, DPS said in a statement.
The two occupants of the Ford Edge remained at the scene and were later identified as Irma Arellano-Arroyo and Guadalupe Garcia-Davalos. During the preliminary investigation at the scene, Arellano-Arroyo informed highway patrol investigators that she was driving the Ford Edge at the time of the collision. Garcia-Davalos told the soldiers he was sleeping in the front passenger seat at the time of the collision, according to the DPS press release.
During the ongoing investigation of the incident over the next two weeks, the Nevada Highway Patrol Multidisciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (MIRT) developed information that raised concerns about the incident.
On July 1, 2021, MIRT investigators requested assistance from the Major Crimes Unit of the Nevada DPS Investigation Division.
The resulting joint investigation revealed that Arellano-Arroyo and Garcia-Davalos lied to investigators on the spot about the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
