Chandīgarh: UT police convicted a landlord for disobeying district magistrate’s orders by failing to provide information about his tenant. Police say Harwinder Singh failed to provide information about his tenant to Maloya Police Station, following which an IPC Section 188 case was filed against him. He was arrested and then released on bail. TNS
Two arrested for flesh trafficking
Zirakpur: Police have recovered two girls and arrested two local residents in a case of human trafficking and coercion of girls into the flesh trade. The suspects have been identified as Rahul and Manpreet Singh, residents of the Air Force Enclave. Police said the suspects were arrested near a restaurant in Zirakpur with two girls in a car. One case was registered at Zirakpur police station. TNS
Teenager charged with rape of a minor
Zirakpur: A youth was convicted of raping a minor employed as a domestic helper at a housing company on VIP Road here on Wednesday. The complainant said the youth, an acquaintance, took her to the roof of the company and raped her on the pretext of marrying her. Zirakpur SHO Deepinder Singh Brar said they registered a case on the statement of the girl. TNS
PU faculty among the top 2% of scientists
Chandīgarh: Dr. Neera Garg (Professor) and Dr. Santosh Kumar Upadhyay (Assistant Professor), Department of Botany, University of Panjab, have been included in the list of top 2% of scientists in the country in agriculture, forestry and plant science categories by the AD Scientific Index, 2022, for their international research publications. The AD Scientific Index (Alper-Doger Scientific Index) carries out evaluations of journals and universities. It is a ranking and analysis system based on scientific performance and the added value of the scientific productivity of individual scientists. TNS
Theft of the delivery man’s scooter
Zirakpur: Miscreants stole a two-wheeler from a delivery man in Pabhat as he went to deliver an order on the first floor of a house around 2am on Tuesday. Complainant Suraj Bhardwaj said he went to Mannat Enclave in Pabhat to deliver food. He returned about five minutes later and found his bike missing. One case has been recorded. TNS
Reserved seller on the Sec 22 market
Chandīgarh: UT Police booked a 27-year-old salesman for preventing Municipal Corporation (MC) personnel from carrying out their duties in Sector 22 here. Complainant Silvamani, who is a beldar in the MC’s law enforcement wing, alleged he was suppressing the encroachment of Shastri Market, when a vendor, Akshay, a resident of Sector 40, who set up his stall illegally, allegedly used abusive language, bullied and deterred him from carrying out his duties. A case under Articles 332 and 353 of the CPI has been registered against the seller at the police station in sector 17. TNS
Victory of 11 points for Plaza Zone
Chandīgarh: Plaza Zone defeated Rock Zone by 11 points in the final championship game of the UTCA Women’s One-Day Domestic Tournament. Batting first, Plaza Zone scored 136/9 in 50 overs. Divya (30), Monika Pandey (28) and Eknoor (20) were the team’s top scorers. Rajni Devi claimed 4/14 for the bowling side. In response, Rock Zone were fielded for 125 runs in the 42 overs. Nandini Sharma (3/33) and Pushpinder Kaur (2/13) were the main wicket takers for the bowling side. Aradhana Bisht (28), Shivani (21) and Palak Rana (17) scored for the team. TNS
Zirakpur school wins karate competition
Zirakpur: Manav Mangal Smart World, here, won the winners trophy on the final day of the inter-school karate tournament at the zonal level. The team won eight gold, three silver and one bronze in this event. In the women’s U-14 event, Toshani, Pragya and Prerna took the top three places respectively. In the U-17 event, Akshita defeated Akshara to win the gold medal. Satinder Singh beat Jaideep Singh to take first place in the boys U-14 category, while Rajveer Singh and Arpit Guleria took joint third position. In the U-17 category, Rudransh won gold beating Rohan, while Jai took bronze. TNS

Chandīgarh: UT Police have registered a case under IPC Section 174-A against Sujinder Singh of Dhanas on the instruction of a local court as he has been declared a Proclaimed Offender (PO). The case was registered at Sector 17 Police Station on the complaint of Pawanpreet Singh, Director of Punjab State Cooperative Agricultural Development Bank Ltd. —TNS
Theft from an apartment in Peer Muchalla
Zirakpur: Miscreants stole Rs 2 lakh and a two-wheeler from an apartment in Panchkula Heights Society, Peer Muchalla here on Tuesday night. The owner of the house, Ramnik Bhardwaj, and his family were sleeping when the disbelievers entered the apartment on the first floor of a building and took some money from the cupboard. They also took the keys to a luxury car and a bicycle, in addition to a scooter parked at the company’s premises. One case has been recorded.
