Bengaluru police arrested a 46-year-old landlord for raping his young tenant from West Bengal at gunpoint in April this year, officials said on Sunday.
The 46-year-old accused is from Bihar and lives with his family in Shanthi Nagar locality in central Bengaluru.
“A case was filed yesterday (Saturday) and the person was arrested on the basis of the complaint. Both underwent a medical examination,” a police official said, asking not to be named.
On April 11, the accused broke into the victim’s house and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint while telling her that he was very powerful and influential and that he could get away with it with anything, police said.
One case was registered at Ashok Nagar police station on Saturday.
The incident has added to the increasingly difficult circumstances for single women to live in urban areas as they are forced to endure harassment and discrimination while finding accommodation and the restrictions imposed on them. The survivor is a student and allegedly confronted the landlord about the latter’s restrictions on any male friends visiting his residence.
